Peter Markus’ collection The Singing Fish plays with the modes of fable and folktale and family drama in ways that made me think, “Aha! This is exactly the book I’ve been looking for!” There’s too little innovative fiction about the outdoors, writing as wild itself as the spaces in which it is set, but The Singing Fish is just that. And now comes the good news that Dzanc Books has added a forthcoming novel by Markus to their list.
On a marginally related note (ha!), Halldór Laxness’ The Fish Can Sing is another favorite.
